Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao ( Save the daughter, educate the daughter) is a campaign of the Government of India that aims to generate awareness and improve the efficiency of welfare services intended for girls in India. The saying goes “When you educate a man, you educate a man but when you educate a woman, you educate a generation”.
For centuries we have witnessed Indian families not rejoicing on the birth of a girl child; not only in rural areas but also in educated urban circles. On top of it, the orthodox families opt for female foeticide or abandoning the girl child. Social and family constraints do not allow the girls to go to school or to opt for higher studies.
Beti Bachao Beti Padhao scheme aims at making girls independent both socially and also financially through education. This approach of the Government can facilitate in generating awareness and improving the efficiency of delivery of welfare services meant for women. Having said that, will it really abolish the orthodox mindset that is prevailing in Indian society for decades?

Questions for the For team:
In a patriarchal society of India, where girls in rural areas are still fighting for equality and respect, will this scheme be able to change the age old orthodox mindset?
Do you think the government of India has been able to reach out to the people appropriately and been able to spread awareness of the scheme rightly?
The scheme requires great civic body support to achieve the objectives of the scheme. Do we have the kind of civic support in our country?
Questions for the against team:
There has been an increase in the number of women joining the armed forces, becoming fighter pilots, scientists, doing research, sports, mountaineering, wrestling, journalism, engineers among others. Data shows that during the last two years the ratio of women police officers has increased to 8.5% from the earlier 6 percent. Doesn’t this prove that the orthodox mindset is on the verge of abolishment?
The effect of the Beti Bachao-Beti Padhao scheme is visible in a short period of 2 years of its launch. The sex ratio has crossed up to 950 females per 1000 males.
Doesn’t this data prove that the people’s mindset is changing?
